Consider a pair of parallel plates with a potential difference of 12 V and are separated by 12 cm.
What is the potential energy of a 1.0 C charge at point A, exactly 30. cm from each plate?

12 cm? Lord, there is fringing. OK, with fringing, the mid point plane through the center of the plates, parallel to the plates, is 6volts potential.
