It is one method of doing multiplication. The common method used in the USA is vertical. This method has the numbers lined up on the diagonal. Google on 'Lattice Math' and you'll find a great explanantion by drmath.

I'am in fourth grade please explain the basics of lattice method, so I can understand.

Draw a square. Divide it in half horizonitally and vertically. example:
72 X 3 place the 7 above the first box the 2 above the second box. Then place the 3 on the right hand side of the box outside of it.

The lattice method originated from ancient India. Unlike the partial-products method which relies on your knowledge of place value, you can use the lattice method as long as you are familiar with your basic facts. The cells are called lattices. Basically you multiply the numbers on top of the lattice by the number to the right. A diagnol line divides the place value into two columns Tens/Ones so if it was 15 x 3, in the cell I would first put down 1/5 for fifteen and the 0/3 for 3. The next part is to add the products along the diagnols.

1. multiply each number from the top to side
2. put the proudut in the boxs under the little box
3.ADD what you got and on the bottom of your lattice box
