The revolution of the moon around the earth makes the moon appear as if it is changing shape. From Earth we see the moon grow from a thin crescent to a full moon, and then shrink back to a thin crescent again. The phases of the Moon depend on its position in relation to the sun and Earth. As the moon makes its way around the earth, we see the bright parts of its surface at different angles. These are called "phases" of the moon.

if you look at a soccer ball from far away you can only see half of it, the half facing you :)
In the case of the moon it is so locked in to earth orbit that one side is always facing earth. Thus astronauts were the first to see the dark side of the moon.

When you see a "full" moon, you are looking at the half that always faces earth. At that time the sun is on the opposite side of earth, but not exactly enough to cause an eclipse.
