just write the words in symbols.
Ben ran 2 times as many laps as Ray.
B = 2R
Lee ran 3 laps
L = 3
which is one-half of the number of laps that Ray ran.
3 = R/2
That leaves us with the equations
B = 2R
L = 3
L = R/2, so R = 2L
B = 2R = 2(2L) = 2(2*3) = 12
