x^2 - 6x = 7

x = 7, 1
x = -7, 1
x = -7, -1

x^2 - 6 x + (6/2)^2 = 7 + (6/2)^2

x^2 - 6 x + 9 = 7 + 9

(x-3)^2 = 16

(x-3) = 4 or (x-3) = -4

x = 7 or x = -1

49 - 42 = 7
