Who destroyed the Heorot and how?

My answer: I think Grendel destroyed the Herot but I am not sure how. This story is hard to comprehend!

According to the story, when Grendal attacked Herot, Beowulf pretended to be asleep until Grendal got close enough for him to grab. He grab Grendal's arm in a "fierce" grasp and no matter what Grendal tried, that grasp could not be broken. Finally, Grendal's arm was torn out at the shoulder. Grendal died.
