White Southerners formed various organizations to resist Reconstruction efforts, the most notable of which was the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). Founded in 1865, the Klan aimed to undermine the Reconstruction policies implemented to rebuild the South and extend rights to newly freed African Americans. The KKK used terror, violence, and intimidation to achieve its goals, targeting Black individuals, as well as white Republicans and supporters of Reconstruction. Other groups, such as the White League and the Red Shirts, also emerged to oppose Reconstruction and restore white supremacy in the South during this period.
