Is Frost talking about a real fork in the road, or is he talking about a life choice? If one has to make a choice, say, going to college or not, what would life be like if the other choice had been made? The "road" not taken. And, in the Whitman poem, the ship the captain has led through the storm is the ship of state, the Union, and the storm is the Civil War.
