If you go to the hardware store and buy 36 tiles... you will have 4 leftover. Because they are Square tiles and the four corners are SHARED. If the question were 1 inch toothpicks, then the answer would be 36. The wording of this question is fine for average kids, but exceptionally smart kids struggle with the false logic of it. If you don't believe me, don't do math, just draw a square and draw in the tiles... Or cut a 9" square of wood and try to frame it with 36 tiles. the correct answer is 32.
