Como' se dice novio? Is it singular or plural? then you will know the answer.
Are you learning the irregular verbs and the Preterit?
dar = to give
yo di = I gave, did give
tú diste = you (familiar, singular) gave, did give
él/ella/usted dio = he/she/you gave, did give
nosotros/nosotras dimos = we gave, did give
ellos/ustedes dieron = they/you-all gave, did give.
Now, if the question asks: "Rose, what did your sweetheard give y ou for Valentine's Day" the answer has to be "HE gave me some very pretty flowers."
There is no short-cut when it comes to verbs. You simply have to memorize the irregular forms.

Memory cue:
Depending upon what kind of learner you are: visual (you must SEE what you want to learn), auditory (you must HEAR what you want to learn, kinesthetic (you must be PHYSICALLY involved to learn), here are some ideas:
1. flash cards with English on one side and Spanish on the other (for vocabulary)
2. flash cards with only the infinitive on the front and all the forms of the tense you are studying on the back.
3. color code what seems difficult to stick in your memory = bilious orange, lime green , etc. because the color helps "set" it in your mind.
4. put the forms on TAPE with a space after each form. At first only LISTEN and try to "guess" in that space before you hear the next form. At first you use that space to "think" and then to "repeat" and finally to "write" the forms.
5. practice tracing the forms. Look at the form, cover it, write (from memory), check very carefully.
REPETITION REPETITION REPETITION is the key to memory!
One of my students wrote all the irregular forms out, laminated them (so they were water proof), put them on the shower wall and in a week or so, when we played a verb game with dice, no one could beat her!
I have "review" sheets on any and everything you could ever study for Spanish. First there is a short explanation, then all the irregularities and even exercises you can do. After you do those, if you so choose, I correct them for you! For Heaven's Sake, ASK and "ye shall receive."
