P = Perimeter
A = Area
P = 2 a + 2 b = 2 ( a + b )
24 = 2 ( a + b ) Divide both sides by 2
12 = a + b
a + b = 12 Subtract a to both sides
a + b - a = 12 - a
b = 12 - a
A = a * b = a * ( 12 - a )
A = 12 a - a ^ 2
The function has a minimum value if f ' ( A ) = 0
and f " ( A ) = a positive number.
