Explain how estimating the quotient helps you place the first digit in the quotient of a division problem

20 answers

Say that you have 5980 divided by 347

Estimate by using 6000/300 = 20

So, I now know my first digit will go into the 10's place

or 57890 divided by 34

that is 60,000 divided by 30 = 2000

my first digit goes into the thousands place.

First use a round number (up or down is okay) that is easy to find the answer for.

"Say that you have 5980 divided by 347

Estimate by using 6000/300 = 20"

It's easier to calculate for 6000/300 than 5980/347, right? So get that answer which is 20.

If you look at 20, it's made up of 2 tens and 0 units. The largest digit is a ten, so that means your answer for 5980/347 will have it's largest digit in the tens too.

This largest digit is called the first digit. So if we use this to guess, it's called placing the first digit.
yo im in 5th grade AND THIS MAKES NO SENSE DANG.(ㆆ_ㆆ)
