YOU USE THE PRETERITE, NOT THE IMPERFECT!!!!

ERA SHOULD BE FUE!!!!!
Tsk! Tsk! Here's a brief summary between the Preterit and the Imperfect.

Preterit translates into "did..." or "-ed" as in "I did go" or "I went" because it is action with a beginning, middle, and an END.

Imperfect translates into "used to..." or "was/were +ing" and also "-ed" but it is description, concentrating on the middle. Of course, it had a beginning, but that is not important here, and as far as we know it may NEVER have ended!

Sometimes only YOU as the "speaker" can decide which you prefer. The party is over and done with last week = fue BUT description = era! Careful with "muchas personas" because it is plural = vinieron.

I would not say "era una piñata" but "había " (there was)

"globos" is plural but the impersonal verb "había" is BOTH singular and plural = there was/there were.

The party was a surprise = La fiesta era (or fue) una sorpresa. Now, if "garcia" is a person, capitalized = García (with accent)

Remember YOU has the speaker can talk about a party that is over and done with = Preterit OR also stress description = Imperfect.
