A variable is a letter to represent an unknown number.

1. x+3

Since we don't know how much his brother ate, we put a variable for it. It doesn't have to be x, it can be b or t or any other letter.

And since it's 3 more, it's adding.

So, variable (x) + 3
(x)+3
