A square game board measures 16 inches on each side. The game board is divided into smaller squares measuring 2 inches on a side. How many small squares are there on the game board?

My answer is 16x16 = 256 x 2=512, then I 16/2 = 8 and 512/8 = 64. Is this correct if so is there a simpler way to work this problem. also am I looking for area or perimeter first?

you are correct. A simpler way might be to note that since the board is 16x16, you can fit 8 of the small squares on a side. So, counting just the small squares, the board is now 8x8 or 64 small squares.

You need the perimeter first to figure how many small squares on a side.
