Question

Why do we rationalize a denominator?

The only reason I can think of and can find in a search is to reduce it because it makes it simpler but is not necessary. Help! I have to write a paper on it.

This is not a physics question. I agree with you that rationalization is not necessary and does not change the value. It usually simplifies it, however. It also makes the numbers easier to multipy and add, etc.
