Could anyone explain to be what these term mean in math? I try googling them but can't find the answer. Thanks

The <i>opposite</i> of a number is its additive inverse. I do not see the term <i>opposite</i> used very frequently in this sense in English, although this is the proper term in French (l'opposé).
For example, the opposite (or additive inverse) of 4 is -4.
You can check the validity by adding the two numbers together. Any number added to its opposite should give zero.
Since 4+(-4)=0, we can safely say that the opposite of 4 is -4.
