A team of 4 golfers scored 69,73,70, and 74 on the first round on a par 72 course. They reduced their team score by 3 on the second round.
a) How many strokes above or below par was the team score on the first round?
b) How many strokes about or below par was the team score on the scond round?

A score less than par (in this case 72) is represented with a negative number while a score above par is represented with a positive number. The scores above would then be scored as -3,+1, -2 and +2. The team score is then -3 + 1 +(-2) + 2 = -2 on the first round. On the second round they scored 3 less or -2 - 3 = -5.
