can you explain to me how 9 becomes 8 something?

Since you can't do 1/8-5/8 because you can't do 1-5, you have to "borrow"..
9 1/8 becomes 8 9/8...if it was just 9 it would be 8 8/8 because 8/8=1..so it's 8 9/8

8 + 1 = 9

1 = 8/8
