1. I couldn't see him in the darkness.
2. I couldn't see him in the dark.

(Are both OK? In the dictionary, I was able to find "in the dark". What about 'in the darkness'? Can we use it as the same meaning?)

Both of those are correct; however "in the dark" is most often used.
