Julio bought a backpack for $39.95 and
2 belts for $17.99 each. The sales tax is 6.5%. How
much did Julio spend for all the items, including
tax?
A $61.71
B $75.93
C $80.87
D $98.01

When I looked people said: (39 + 2*17) * 1.065 =. It equals 77.745, but that's not an answer choice

Wondering why whoever gave you that answer dropped the cents of the price.
(39.95 + 2(17.99)*(1.065) = ...

Yes, I agree with an answer as well.

If I were doing round numbers I would choose
(40+2*18)(1.065) = 80.94 which is a lot better approximation

I bet you still used a calculator to get that 80.94
So it is no longer an "approximation"
Why would a calculator care if you used 39.95 or 40 ?
