One way to read this: wouldn't the new sheet be 4.5 by 7 ?? Your wording is not clear, one could think you are cutting 2 by 2 squares at each corner. Then the paper is no longer a rectangle, and your area = (8.5)(11) - 4(2)^2 square inches.
