Job Outlook
"What would happen if everyone studied the same subject in school in order to get the same type of job? In this situation, upon graduation, the job market would be flooded with an excess of people looking for the same type of job. The supply of applicants would increase, but the demand for jobs would also increase because there would be a lesser quantity of jobs.

Luckily, people have differing interests and this does not happen most of the time. However, it does happen in some career fields. That is why it is important to consider the future of multiple occupations before pursuing a career. Job outlook is a type of career and labor market research that provides information about the quantity and availability of jobs in the future.

Conduct research about the projected number of jobs in your chosen career and location. Choosing a career that is in high demand by consumers will make it easier to find a job in that field because a larger quantity of jobs will exist. Job outlooks also affect job security, so if one of your career expectations involves finding a job and buying a house or a car, you should consider how the job outlook might impact your plans. For example, in the future, you may buy a house or take out a car loan. When making these purchases, you may need to have a stable job that is not projected to decline in quantity. A declining number of available jobs in a field may predict future layoffs. Have you heard people talk about getting laid off from jobs? When people get laid off, it is usually related to the economy. A weakened economy causes the demand for workers in a given field to decrease, typically due to need or budget cuts. For example, the number of computer operator positions is declining because software has been created to automate business operations. This new, more efficient software reduces the need for human computer operators. If you choose a career as an occupational therapist or a physical therapist, there will be a high demand for those types of jobs in the future.

People who spend time planning their career paths create reasonable expectations for success. You should conduct research about the job outlook for the career you intend to pursue.

Personal Fulfillment
A person in a suit is pointing to a picture of the text: What’s Important To You?
In addition to setting personal expectations, people often choose specific career paths based on salary. Some people consider salary to be an important factor, but you should also consider your values and beliefs. Plastic surgeons who perform elective surgeries may make a lot of money. However, if you hate to see money wasted on unnecessary surgery, becoming a plastic surgeon could involve sacrificing your beliefs. Many jobs with high salaries demand long hours away from family and friends. Of course, some jobs with low salaries, such as teachers and laborers, require equally long hours. It's important to find a balance between funding the lifestyle you want and performing work that aligns with your values. If you enjoy helping people and find social work a natural fit, you may also need to accept living a less extravagant lifestyle or being unable to pay off student loans as quickly as you'd hoped. Your personal fulfillment should be considered when thinking about your career expectations.
