Marilyn got a birthday check from her grandmother. She spent half of it on a soccer ball, and then earned $20 mowing a neighbors lawn. She now has $38. How much was her birthday check?

The answer would be C, because you would do 38-20, then divide by two, if that makes sense.

No it doesn't make sense. She received much more than $9 for her birthday.

The answer is not C.
At the beginning, she had C. Then she used half of it: what does she have at this point?
Then, she gets $20: so she has 20 + what she had at the last stage = $38.
You should be able to work out the answer by yourself by spending a bit of time on each step.
