just do the dot product. You get
cosx*cos(a+x) + sinx*sin(a+x)
= cosx*cosa*cosx - cosx*sina*sinx + sinx*sina*cosx + sinx*cosa*sinx
= cosa(cos^2x+sin^2x)
= cosa
cosx*cos(a+x) + sinx*sin(a+x)
= cosx*cosa*cosx - cosx*sina*sinx + sinx*sina*cosx + sinx*cosa*sinx
= cosa(cos^2x+sin^2x)
= cosa
