What does the passage say? The farmer and his wife are to cultivate corn and cotton, maintain the farm and the fences, etc. The landowner, I.G. Bailey, will pay the farmer 1/3 share of the corn and 1/2 share of the cotton he and his wife raise (as well as the fodder). In other words, Mr. Bailey gets 1/2 the cotton and 2/3 the corn raised by the freed slave on Mr. Bailey's land. Bailey will also furnish (and own) the mules and implements Mr. Freedman will use to raise those crops.
What kind of an arrangement is this? And what tells you that it is that kind of contract/arrangement?
