Myths are a way to make mysteries of the world understandable. Before there was science, mankind needed a story to explain things like weather, illness, and other common things that seemed to be beyond normal understanding. So, they were attributable to gods, or some supernatural force beyond the control of mankind. They made sense of things that seemed to make no sense any other way. Even today, they do much the same thing.
