X is unknown until the Eqs has been solved. N or any letter can be used for the unknown.

1. 3x + 7 = -15.
Isolate 3x by subtracting 7 from both sides:
3x+7-7 = -15-7,
3x = -22,
divide both sides by 3:
X = -22/3 = -7 1/3.

2. -2x - 6 = 12.
-2x-6 + 6 = 12 + 6,
-2x = 18, X = 18/-2 = -9.
