My textbook says, "In 1944 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Smith v. Allwright that primary elections had to be open to all races." Is 1 taxes?

I'm not Ms.Sue, but no, taxes is not the answer to #1. After the "hot" war of World War II, was there another kind of "war" underway? Don't guess again. We won't correct a third guess.

Is there any way that you could help me as I cannot find this answer in my textbook.

Ms. Sue
I'm sorry. But after I did a little reading, I know that your first answer was correct for 1. I had forgotten that civil rights became a big issue after the war. So Congress did concentrate on civil rights laws.

Also -- you're right about 4. I misread the question! Sorry.
My brain seems to be scrambled today.

I don't know what your textbook says. I haven't read it. After World War II, we were involved in the "Cold War". Civil rights legislation came along in 1957, then in the mid-1960s. In the meantime, we concentrated on defense in developing a nuclear arsenal, the hydrogen bomb, bomb shelters, etc. The interstate highway system was enacted as a means of moving troops rapidly across the country, if necessary. Our emphasis was on defense more than anything else.
