The perimeter of an isosceles triangle is 36 meters.Five times the length of the base is 2 meters less than three times the length of each of the congruent sides.How long is each side of the triangle?
Work-
a+b+c=36. 5(b)=3(c)-2

remember , two of the sides would be equal
let the base be x
let each of the equal sides by y
x + 2y = 36 or x = 36-2y ***
5x + 2 = 3y
5x - 3y = -2
sub *** into this last equation
5(36-2y) - 3y = -2
180 - 10y - 3y = -2
-13y = -182
y = 14
then x = 36-28 = 8
the base is 8 and the two equal sides are 14 each
check:
is 8 + 14 + 14 = 36 ? YES
five times the base = 40
three times the side = 42
is 40 less than 42 by 2 ? YES
all is good
