5,000 regroups into 49910. This is because you cannot subtract 2,896 from 5,000, at least not easily, so you take 5,000 cross off the 5 and make a 4. The 1,000 that you took away replaces the first 0 with a 10, then you cross of the 10 and put a 9, the 100 goes to the second 0 and becomes a 10. You cross of that 10 to make a 9 and take that 10 and put it in the last 0 place getting 49910. Now that you have regrouped you can subtract 2896 from 5,000/49910. Which is 2104.

Ungrouping is breaking apart one unit of a place value to get 10 units of the next smaller place value. Bridget broke apart 1 ten place value to get 10 ones 4,990 + 10 = 5,000.

Since 5,000 has zero Hundreds, zero Tens and zero ones you have to ungroup the Thousands place value in order to break 10 Hundreds. Then you have to break 10 Hundreds into ten tens to make 10 ones. You can also check your answer by adding 2,896 + 2,104 to equal 5,000. Long story short you have to ungroup the Thousands place value and move right. 5 into 4 thousands.

Understanding place value is key to explaining how the ungrouped number of 5,000 is derived in the given text. When Bridget subtracts 2,896 from 5,000, she starts from the rightmost digit of each number. The first digit is in the thousands place, and since there are no digits to the right of it, it remains as is - representing 5,000. This showcases how each digit's position affects its value and helps us comprehend the concept of place value.
