And it's worth noting that "survival of the fittest" is a mis-reading of Darwin's thoughts. He discovered, or proposed, that nature adapts to changing circumstances. The "Social Darwinists" took a more pessimistic and cynical view, thinking that people who are socially "unfit" deserve no attention and should just go away and die, or suffer the consequences in some way. This is over-simplified, but a hint at these "theories."
