Does it have a horrible ending? When he sees lights and hears music in the distance is horrible?

What doubts does he have about running away? Reread the part about running away.

He is worried they will starve to death and how will he raise Gab. It's not a horrible ending....this book was wonderful in my opinion.

iris, in the question you posted above, it says "the following passages." You did not list the passages that follow for you to choose from.

The ending is not what the question asks of you, but it is about his doubts about opting for choice as opposed to the regimented world he left behind. What are his doubts?

Whoever you are, you are avoiding the question you posed at the top of this thread. I don't think we can help you as long as you avoid your own question.
