When the object of the verb is general, as in pasta or noodles, etc., "a" is not needed or is wrong. A sandwich, however is "a sandwich," since that is specific. You may make either "salad" or "a salad," with the article making it specific. If you want to make 8 general, you would say, "I cnn make sandwiches," making it plural and therefore more general.
