A bag contains 2 white marbles and 7 purple marbles. Two marbles are drawn at random. One marble is drawn and not replaced. Then a second marble is drawn.
A) What is the probability of selecting a purple marble and then a white marble? B) What is the probability of selecting two white marbles? C) Is there a greater chance of selecting two white marbles in a row or two purple marbles in a row? Show your work.

If the events are independent, the probability of both/all events occurring is determined by multiplying the probabilities of the individual events.
A. 7/9 * 2/(9-1) = ?
B. 2/9 * (2-1)/9-1) = ?
C. Use similar processes for this question.

a.
\frac{7purple}{9total} * \frac{2white}{8total} \\ \frac{14}{72} \\ =0.194
The denominator of the second number goes down one because you aren't replacing the initial marble pulled, making the amount of marbles in the bag go down, but not affecting the white count because you pulled a purple marble.
b.
\frac{2white}{9total} * \frac{1white}{8total} \\ \frac{2}{72} \\ =0.278
The same can be said about the denominator for this problem, but not the numerator. The numerator must go down one number as well, because you already chose one white marble, taking one of the white marbles out of the bag, leaving you with one solitary, white marble.
c.
Chance of selecting two purple marbles:
\frac{7purple}{9total} * \frac{6purple}{8total} \\ \frac{42}{72} \\ =0.583
Chance of selecting two white marbles:
\frac{2white}{9total} * \frac{1white}{8total} \\ \frac{2}{72} \\ =0.278
Chance of selecting two purple vs. Chance of Selecting 2 white:
0.583>0.278.
It is more likely to select 2 purple marbles.
Hope this helps

First off it is cheating but this website is made for that purpose they either give you the math problem as well for you to find out or they just give the answers and either way at least the kid is getting 100 and not a 0 for this so calm down.

I appreciate this very much. This will help my daughter a lot. Also, everyone stop arguing. If your parents saw the way your acting and speaking, what would they say. If my daughter saw this and did this I would trace my steps and see she got this from here. High five to y'all's foreheads!!!!

in general, the probability of some event
= number of times that event can happen/total number of possible outcomes
so ...
you have 2 white and 7 purple
prob of purple = 7/9
then
prob of white = 2/8 , there are only 8 left since you drew one already.
prob(purple, then white) = (7/9)(2/4) = 7/36
prob(2 whites) = (2/9)(1/8) = 1/36
prob(2 purples) = 7/9(6/8) = 7/12
and of course 7/12 > 1/36
clearly , since you had more purples than whites, the chances of getting purples would be greater than the chances of getting whites.
prob of getting the 5 on the spin = 1/6
prob of getting a pair = 6/36 =1/6
So she has the same chance of winning at either games, makes no difference.
