Asked by John

What belief does Whitman share with Ralph Waldo Emerson and other transcendentalists?

A) We should live our lives well to achieve everlasting happiness.
B) Man learns his most important lessons and insights in the present, through direct experience.

If I recall correctly Whitman was answering Ralph Waldo Emerson's call for "An American Poet," in which Whitman adored those who were seekers of joy and happiness in everyday life.

Actually, I think B is the answer you must give, but it's not a very good summary of either Whitman or Emerson and transcendentalism. The point I think Whitman made again and again was that there is the universal in all of us, as experienced in every day life, which is quite similar to Emerson's idea of the universal or transcendental. Your observation about Whitman is accurate as far as a one-sentence description can cover it. :)
