Why is plastic an expensive material to use?

This is really an opinion question. I think plastic is expensive for two reasons. One is that it is made from materials derived from oil and we all know the price of oil these days. The second is that plastic is not biodegradable; therefore, the world will become buried in plastic if we continue its use in throw away products. You may want to gather some other opinions.
