Why do people have stress learning new information?

Learning new things causes one to have to exert an effort, intellectually and, perhaps, emotionally. If you have always believed, and been told, that reading to much will ruin one's eyesight, and science proves it does not, it may upset some people. Sometimes it is hard for people to accept that religious beliefs may not be literally true and can be explained by science. There may be any number of reasons for new information to cause stress.
