Who was Miles Macdonnel?

He was first governor of Red River Colony and had a share in the HBC company. He bought land in the Red River Valley to provide a home for the Scots that were poor, and he didn't want to give any part of the land to the NWC. He collected some settlers, and reached Red River, there he met the individuals belonging to the NWC. The NWC attacked and fired upon the Macdonnel's settlers. The NWC ordered Macdonnel to give up, and he did, because he did not want violence to spread as it would result in loss of blood.

Could you please give me some more information. And also, is Red River Colony and Red River Valley two different things?
