While Americans are largely unfamiliar with the folk tunes of their heritage, why do you think the people of Japan continue to perform and enjoy thiers even today?

The Japanese culture is much more homogeneous than American culture.
Cultural continuity survives better in its area of origin. Americans are immigrants (except for the Native Americans), things get lost when you move, including folk music. The following generations may not feel the importance of preserving what they might see as "their parents past", and give little or no effort towards preserving it.
