When the two numbers have no common factor.

e.g. 1/7 + 1/9, needs a LCM of 63
but , 1/35 + 1/84, needs a LCM of 420

in general, the LCM of two numbers = (their product) รท (their HCF)
so in the last example: 35*84/7 = 420, where 7 was the HCF of 35 and 84

another e.g.
60 and 24
60 = 2*2*3*5
24 = 2*2*2*3 , the HCF = 12
LCM = 60*24/12 = 120
