When 1.11 g of vanadium is dissolved in HCl, 0.066 g of H2 is produced. Calculate the value of x for the compound VClx produced according to the chemical equation: V = xHCl -> VClx + 0.5x H2

1 answer

The skeleton equation is
V + HCl --> VCl + H2

1.11 g V = 1.11/50.94 = 0.02179 moles
0.066 g H2 = 0.066/2 = 0.033 moles
That is a ratio of 1V to 1.5 moles H or
2 moles V to 3 moles H2. Therefore, the equation is
2V + HCl ==> 2VCl + 3H2
To make it balance, we need a 6 for HCl and that maks a 3 for 2VCl3.
2V + 6HCl ==> 2VCl3 + 3H2
