As a citizen, you were unable to enact change because an elite group of delegates chose your political party’s candidates. Unsafe conditions for workers and unfair business practices were common. In the early 1900s, Americans were frustrated with politicians and business leaders.In this era, a reform movement known as progressivism swept the nation. It was influenced by the Populists of the 1800s but considerably expanded to include reforms of all kinds. The Progressive Era was a time of wide-ranging causes and varied movements when activists and reformers from diverse backgrounds and with different agendas pursued their goals of a better America. From about 1890 to 1920, activists sought to address many issues. These issues included rapid urban sprawl, immigration, corruption, industrial working conditions, the growth of large corporations, women’s rights, anti-black violence, and white supremacy in the South. Since reformers were trying to make progress, they were called Progressives.Reformers wanted to improve democracy and industry. Citizens wanted democratic reforms that would give them a stronger voice in government. Workers and consumers wanted better working conditions and business practices. Women wanted the right to vote. African Americans wanted an end to discrimination and racial violence. Americans began to ask themselves what the role of government was in helping citizens, regulating business, and leveling the playing field. Three presidents would embody the progressive spirit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and Woodrow Wilson.
