I would say( b)
Since it's a learned society, presumably its members have already gained a lot of knowledge.

What does your book say?
I would jump at answer b, if it were worded..."to advance knowledge on a variety of subjects". That is actually why we send kids to universities. Some think it is to get a batter job, but the truth is, it is to educate them, and advance knowledge.
