Maybe it's like the difference between something on the list of "classic literature" and something you get off the bookshelf at Walmart??
The word "film" includes all movies, good and bad, but in this comparison/contrast is probably intended to indicate a higher-level of talent, sophistication, etc. -- "an important art form."

The term "popular cinema" indicates anything that makes money at the movie theaters!!

What is the difference between a film and popular cinema? I cannot seem to figure out the distinction other than maybe the timing of the clips. Could someone please help me gain a better understanding of the difference?
