Years ago, it was silver salts in a gel emulsion on an acetate film.
Nowadays, many others are available, most common are CCD (Charge coupled detectors) which are used to digitize the image immediately. There are a variety of other detectors. It is not uncommon in large flat detectors to put amorphous selenium semiconductors, and get the image.
