The control of most of Central American agricultural land by one company restricts competition in labor and wholeale produce markets, and has historically led to the support of military dictatorships in some countries. This is apparently less of a problem nowadays.

The benefit of the United Fruit Company owning so much land is that the company developed railroads and port facilities to help it’s business. This development helped transportation and communication within the region. One of the drawbacks is with a foreign company owning so much land while the local people struggle to make a living.
