Do you say "the Augustan or The Augustans were interested in real life".
I'd use "The Augustans..."

He admitted it had been he who ate all the cake./He admitted eating all the cake. Are they both correct?
Both are correct now! But I wouldn't use the first one -- almost no one speaks that way.
