let the three numbers be
x-1, x, and x+1 , where x is the middle number
x-1 + x + x+1 = 18
3x=18
x=6
so the middle number is 6, and the three numbers are 5,6, and 7
btw,
You could define the numbers any way you want. I could say,
let the first number be (5x+7), then the next two are (5x+8) and (5x+9)
then 5x+7 + 5x+8 + 5x+9 = 18
15x + 24 = 18
15x = -6
x = -6/15 = -2/5
As long as I then use my definitions to find the numbers ....
then the numbers are 5x+7 = 5(-2/5) + 7 = 5
5x(-2/5) + 8 = 6
5x(-2/5) + 9 = 7
the sum of three consecutive numbers is eighteen. Write an expression describing the equation and solve the state of the three numbers
