It should be divided into two sentences. (It's not a run-on, just too long for one sentence.)
The references "her" and "she" need to be clarified. Do those pronouns refer to the patient or to the nurse?
The patient obtained records in order to save the nurse a phone call to her previous doctor and she made sure to ask right away for this to be done to save time.
